We remember Charles H. Petty who tragically passed away during the Bark A. R. Tucker’s voyage. On December 14th, 1863, Charles and the crew were sailing along the coast of Africa during a tropical calm. The heat was incredible and Charles decided to cool off in the waters as they rested. Unfortunately the ocean concealed numerous sharks and the 18 year old did not spot them in time. Before anyone knew what occurred, many heard the shrieks and screams of Charles who had been bitten on his leg and hip. The captain lassoed him onto the deck wearing his grave injury. Sadly the crew did what they could however after nine hours of shock and blood loss, Charles H. Petty passed away. His remains were buried on the Island of De Loss nearing the coast of Africa. As horrible as Charles’s story is, it serves as an important reminder to us all one can never be too careful out at sea.
