David Roberts

David Roberts was a mariner who resided in New Bedford, Massachusetts on 150 Middle Street in modern day downtown. David was married to Sally Crapo on July 16th, 1836 and was later listed in the New Bedford City Directories as a resident in 1838 and 1839. Between those two years, it is assumed David embarked on the Mercury Ship to Sumatra where unfortunately he met his untimely demise. Sadly with little records remaining of David, we aren’t fully certain as to why he ventured to Sumatra or how his death even occurred. We are certain though David Roberts was a valued mariner and went above and beyond for our community, thus earning him one of the first cenotaphs at the New Bedford Port Society.
