Peter C Cropsy

We commemorate Peter C. Cropsy from Staten Island, New York who ventured aboard the Awashonks whaleship.

Like many others, Peter started his whaling voyage at the young age of eighteen. Though there were countless whaling vessels at the time, Peter found himself eventually traversing on the Awashonks from Falmouth Massachusetts. On board, Peter worked alongside his fellow crew members for numerous months as they sailed far and wide. Sadly this would not last however.

On July 9th, 1847, Peter C. Cropsy was unexpectedly thrown overboard by the momentum of an enormous wave during treacherous conditions. The crew was horrified at the sight, however little could be done. Unfortunately Peter was unrecoverable and eventually the Awashonks later returned to Falmouth. Later on a cenotaph was erected in Peter’s name at the Seamen’s Bethel to commemorate him and honor his memory.
