A Sanctuary of Stories

Help Us Preserve a Sanctuary of Stories by Sharing Yours

Within the walls of the Seamen’s Bethel and Mariners’ Home live generations of stories — stories of courage, sacrifice, hope, remembrance, and connection. Some are etched into memorial tablets and cenotaphs. Others live in family memories, conversations, and personal experiences passed from one generation to the next.

As part of our Sanctuary of Stories annual campaign, we invite our community to help preserve the stories that continue to shape the legacy of the New Bedford Port Society.

“In this same New Bedford there stands a Whaleman’s Chapel, and few are the moody fishermen, shortly bound for the Indian Ocean or Pacific, who fail to make a Sunday visit to this spot.”

— Herman Melville, Moby-Dick (1851)

How You Can Help

Perhaps you have:

  • A personal connection to the Seamen’s Bethel or Mariners’ Home
  • A memory of visiting or attending an event
  • A family story connected to New Bedford’s maritime heritage
  • A loved one who worked at sea
  • A story of someone lost at sea and remembered here
  • A reason why the Bethel holds special meaning for you
  • A story about why you support the Port Society and its mission

Stories have always found their way to the harbor. Some arrive through history books and memorials. Others arrive through families, friendships, and shared memories. Together, they become part of something larger — a living record of the people and experiences that continue to define this place.

Your story may become part of future exhibits, publications, social media features, campaign materials, or community storytelling projects helping ensure these voices continue to inspire future generations.

Thank you for helping us preserve this Sanctuary of Stories.
