A Sanctuary of Stories: Brett Carlsen

As a New Bedford native, Brett Carlsen has always been drawn to the rich history of the city he calls home. With the New Bedford Port Society being one of the city’s oldest organizations, it was only natural that he would find a connection to its mission of preserving the past. For Brett, bridging the gap between history and the present is especially important, making A Sanctuary of Stories the perfect opportunity to share that passion.

Brett began his career in local history in 2018 at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. He later joined the New Bedford Port Society, where he helps coordinate events, manage social media, engage with the community, and research New Bedford’s past. Through the many events held at the Seamen’s Bethel, Brett has witnessed firsthand how these historic spaces continue their longstanding tradition of serving families and visitors from around the world.

In this installment of A Sanctuary of Stories, Brett reflects on the importance of preserving the memories of those who came before us and why their stories should never be forgotten. In his own words, “They are not just names on a stone slab. They represent real people whose lives and stories deserve to be remembered.” Brett believes that future generations can only learn from the history we choose to preserve and share. He hopes that by continuing these efforts, our community can ensure these stories remain a meaningful part of New Bedford’s future.

With your help, we can continue preserving the stories, places, and memories that make our city special. We invite you to learn more about A Sanctuary of Stories and support the New Bedford Port Society.
