Help Support the Herman Melville Statue

The New Bedford Port Society is proud to support the creation of a new public statue honoring Herman Melville, one of America’s most influential authors and a figure deeply connected to New Bedford’s maritime history.
After reviewing more than 40 artist submissions from around the country, a selection committee chose a winning design that captures Melville’s literary legacy and his ties to the sea. The statue is planned for installation later this year near Seamen’s Bethel, the historic “Whaleman’s Chapel” famously referenced in Moby-Dick.
This project represents an important cultural investment in New Bedford’s historic waterfront and will serve as a lasting tribute to the city’s role in shaping one of the great works of American literature.
The New Bedford Port Society has committed significant support toward this effort, but community donations are essential to help cover the remaining costs and bring this landmark project to completion.
Every gift helps move this historic installation closer to reality. Thank you for supporting New Bedford’s maritime and literary heritage.
