What a remarkable day at the Seamen’s Bethel.
The New Bedford Port Society extends our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for the unveiling of the new Herman Melville statue, created by acclaimed artist Stefanie Rocknak. The statue stands as a lasting tribute to Melville, Moby-Dick, and the profound connection between the legendary novel and the city of New Bedford.
The celebration brought together an incredible group of speakers, performers, artists, community leaders, and supporters. Rosemary Gill of the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center served as our wonderful master of ceremonies, guiding us through a memorable program.
We were honored to hear remarks from New Bedford Port Society President Phil Oliveira, Mayor Jon Mitchell, Robert K. Wallace, Regents Professor of Literature at Northern Kentucky University, Margo Saulnier of New Bedford Creative, and artist Stefanie Rocknak, who brought this extraordinary vision to life.
One of the day’s most unforgettable moments came when acclaimed actor Sam Waterston delivered a spectacular reading from Moby-Dick, bringing Melville’s words to life in the very place where the story’s connection to New Bedford has been felt for generations.
The ceremony was beautifully complemented by music on the organ performed by Paul Sardinha, adding to the atmosphere and significance of the occasion.
This statue is more than a monument to a famous author. It is a celebration of New Bedford’s place in literary and maritime history—and a reminder of the stories, people, and places that continue to connect our community to the world.
