The Seamen’s Bethel is home to many interesting artifacts that have been preserved through countless years. Today we take a look at Captain Bakers desk from New Bedford’s Butler Flat’s Lighthouse. This very desk stayed in the Butler Flat Light Station and accompanied it’s operators like Captain Amos Baker Jr. since its installment in 1898. Not many have seen the interior of a lighthouse but having a desk was rather vital as it allowed keepers to track and store useful information such as weather patterns and ship sightings. Prior to Butler Flat, the city of New Bedford and those that traversed beyond the Acushnet River relied on the Clark’s Point Lighthouse located where Fort Taber stands today.
