Charles W. Fairfax II, MD

1998 – 2001

Dr. Fairfax was a pillar of our maritime community- a man whose compassion, intellect, and love of the sea shaped every corner of his life.

Born in 1931, Dr. Fairfax was a resident of both Boston and Dartmouth. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, he served as a dedicated physician for decades, healing countless lives with both skill and passion. His legacy in medicine is matched only by his contributions to civic life.

A proud member of the New Bedford Port Society for 43 years, Dr. Fairfax stewarded our mission to preserve maritime heritage. He gave popular lectures on maritime history at the New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park, always eager to share the stories of our working port and those who sailed from it. He also served his beloved New Bedford Yacht Club with the same care, finding peace on the water and joy in casting a line- fishing being one of his lifelong passions.

He was not only a man of the sea but a man of the community. Dr. Fairfax helped found the Dartmouth Youth Hockey Association, nurturing a love of the game for generations of young players.

Above all, he was devoted to his family. His love and respect for his wife Sue, and his pride in his children, were evident in every part of his life.

Dr. Fairfax’s leadership and spirit continue to shape the Seamen’s Bethel today. We honor his memory with gratitude and affection.
