Edward H. Cook

1948 – 1953

Edward H. Cook, our 17th president, was also deeply involved with the development and maintenance of our community’s historical buildings.

Edward lived along the south coast area of Massachusetts with his family for quite a few years, owning numerous land thanks to the result of the thriving whaling industry prior. Being surrounded by other family members who joined, Edward believed in joining the Navy in his younger years and serving with the fellow officers of Company G locally. Afterwards, Edward’s attention shifted more to finances and realty as many around him transitioned their field of work from the open seas to bookkeeping and finances. He had heard of Abbott’s involvement with the development of local railways and mills and soon joined his team as the official treasurer. Thanks to Edward’s efforts, construction costs were reduced significantly and the organization was able to fund local community projects that still stand to this very day. One of the most costly and commendable buildings was the Quissett Mill that impressed many and word quickly spread of Edward’s leadership. As a result, the members of the New Bedford Port Society elected Edward H. Cook as president in 1948 where he led the Seamen’s Bethel for five strong years.

Thanks to Edward and his contributions, our church and surrounding area have been able to not only share and preserve priceless history but remember the importance of perseverance and dedication to our community.
