Frederick J. Toomey

2012 – 2023

We’d like to look back with gratitude on the life and service of Fred Toomey, our 31st  President of the Seamen’s Bethel. Fred Joined the Seamen’s Bethel’s board in 2001 and along with his close friend Bruce Oliveira, became part of the duo fondly known as “Frick and Frack.” Through quiet determination and countless volunteer hours, Fred helped guide the Seamen’s Bethel and Mariner’s Home through a historic restoration by upgrading safety systems, preserving the 19th-century woodwork, and installing handicapped accessibility for everyone to be included. To say that Fred was loyal to our church is a huge understatement.

A proud Navy veteran, lifelong New Bedford resident, and devoted educator, Fred was known for his kindness, humor, and bringing people together. When you walked into the Seamen’s Bethel, Fred would be more than happy to guide you and share our local history (while giving some seafood suggestions as well!) Fred stepped down as president in 2023 but his contributions, generosity, and vision still inspire us to this very day. Loved by all who knew him, he is missed dearly as one of the most loyal and dedicated men the Seamen’s Bethel has ever seen.
