George N. Alden

1923 – 1926

Did you know one of our past presidents was one of the last living links between New Bedford and the Union Army of the Civil War?

George N. Alden, who served as president of the Seamen’s Bethel from 1923 to 1926, was the sole surviving member of the Grand Army of the Republic in New Bedford-a living witness to a nation once divided. His commitment to both country and community was unmatched, and his leadership at the New Bedford Port Society helped carry our historic church’s mission into a new century. Being a local of New Bedford, George grew up witnessing the whaling era along with high tensions between the north and south. As soon as he was able to, George joined the military and quickly rose in rank and eventually earned the title of commander. Though the local soldiers of our greater New Bedford area fought bravely, the war proved to be cruel and deadly, leaving very few to return home.

After the war, George settled down on Arnold Place in New Bedford. The honored veteran attended the Seamen’s Bethel along with other family members and eventually became our president. Now as we reflect on George’s legacy and impact, we salute his life of devotion and the indelible mark he left on the Seamen’s Bethel and New Bedford alike.
