We pay our respects to John Glover from London, England who traveled on the ship China back in 1833. The voyage began on July 4th of that very year when the ship and her crew left New Bedford’s harbor and into the Atlantic Ocean. The ship China trekked many miles and sought precious whales for their oil just like many other vessels during the whaling era. Of course, such lines of work are often enmeshed with various hazards that are inevitably faced.
It was on January 27th, 1835 when the vessel China was journeying near St. Helena. The crew was expected to end their search for whales in less than three months when sadly John was lost overboard. The loss of the twenty-two year old was devastating for all as they were so close to returning home. When they arrived to port, news spread of John’s passing. Still heartbroken, those who knew John erected a cenotaph in his name to never forget his sacrifice and to cherish his memory evermore
