1906 – 1912
Jonathan was born in the city of New Bedford where whaling was especially prominent. The Howlands had already made a name of their own throughout the area thanks to their efforts and skills among other merchants. Having been told the stories of George Howland Jr.’s success, Jonathan took it upon himself to capitalize on the thriving whaling era and established “J & J Howland Merchants” with his brother James. Together, the two brothers worked on Middle St. in New Bedford where they brought attention to the city and handled the multitude of challenges faced by merchants of their time.
Eventually Jonathan joined the New Bedford Port Society as one of the board members, understanding the families of local whaleman and fishermen required support and comfort. His colleagues admired Jonathan’s dedication to the Seamen’s Bethel and soon enough elected him as president in 1906. During his time, attendance to our church rose exponentially and the New Bedford Port Society was able to grow even more. To this day, Jonathan’s home on 38 South Sixth Street still remains thanks to the Waterfront Historic Area LeaguE as does his legacy, serving as a reminder of the result of hard work and perseverance.
