The New Bedford Port Society is proud to once again be part of the annual Moby-Dick Marathon, a beloved literary tradition that brings Herman Melville’s masterpiece to life in the very place that inspired it.
Readers will gather at the Seamen’s Bethel for a live reading of Father Mapple’s Sermon, one of the most iconic and powerful chapters in Moby-Dick. This chapter, set within the Bethel itself, captures the spiritual gravity of the maritime world and remains one of the most memorable moments in American literature.
In-person seating requires a wristband. Wristbands are assigned through a lottery system.
For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available in the Gallery, allowing audiences to experience the reading remotely.
Hymn sheets will be provided for attendees and will include “The Ribs and Terrors in the Whale,” enhancing the immersive experience of this historic reading.
Whether joining us in person or online, we invite you to be part of this meaningful moment where literature, history, and place come together at the Seamen’s Bethel.
