We pay tribute to those lost among the scalloper Navigator. On November 30th, 1977, twelve brave souls left the New Bedford harbor to the waters east of Nantucket. After the vessel went missing, the Coast Guard searched for any sign of the crew or ship. It was on January 8th, 1978 that an Italian fishing vessel discovered the remains of Richard W. Neild about ninety miles south of Martha’s Vineyard. Later that year, the New Bedford Port Society was able to memorialize the crew and Navigator, recognizing their courage and dedication to our community and beyond.
