Simon Bates and Warren Wilber

Simeon was first officer and a crucial member of the crew who sadly passed away on July 18th, 1839 while on a whaling voyage. After his passing, Simeon’s loved ones created a monument in his honor in Spring Hill Cemetery, Sandwich. Another courageous man who was lost too soon was Warren Wilber. Warren passed away on August 14th, 1839 at the age of 21. He too was traveling upon the Gideon Howland and tragically lost his life during a whaling voyage. Though the specific details of his death were sadly never discerned, we can affirm he was more than a courageous man who gave his life for the betterment of our city and community.
