Stephen Taber Clock

It’s no secret the Seamen’s Bethel is home to all sorts of unique and varying artifacts. This beautiful Stephen Taber clock is just one of the many historic items we proudly display in our church, and its tale is quite interesting!

The creator of this clock, Stephen Taber, was born on October 23rd, 1777 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The Tabers were known for their involvement in the whaling community, working with other fellow merchants, and, to no surprise, clockmaking. This particular clock was crafted in the early 1800’s and was bought first by David Worth who lived on the corner of Flora and Union St. on Nantucket. David was captivated by the elegant mahogany Roxbury tall-case clock’s features including its moon-phase dial. David noted the strong Boston influence and sought to include it in his home, where he eventually passed it down to his only daughter Mary Worth. Throughout the years, the clock had been bestowed upon Mary’s descendants where it remained on Nantucket up until recently.

To this day, we happily preserve Stephen’s masterpiece for all to appreciate.
