1993 – 1996
Leadership at the Seamen’s Bethel is shaped over time- built not only by those who hold titles, but by those who return year after year, quietly offering their time, thought, and wisdom. William L. Reed was one such presence. His service to the New Bedford Port Society was steady, thoughtful, and deeply rooted- less a chapter and more a constant thread through our recent history.
Though he served as president from 1993 to 1996, titles never defined Mr. Reed. His presence did. He offered consistency in uncertain times, care without ceremony, and a well understood belief in the mission of our organization- not just as a place, but as a promise.
At our 172nd annual meeting, Mr. Reed stepped down from the Board of Managers, concluding many years of service. In response, he was named an honorary board member- less a retirement than a recognition that some roles never truly end.
Mr. Reed is part of the quiet story beneath the headlines. A graduate of Fairhaven High School, Boston University, and the New England Institute, he’s been a licensed funeral director since 1962 and a faithful member of the Grace Episcopal Church. His service has spanned organizations and generations- but here at the Seamen’s Bethel, it’s felt most in the way the doors open, the lights come on, and the work continues.
We’re grateful to William L. Reed not simply for leading the New Bedford Port Society, but for embodying it.
