Herbert Wing

1934 – 1940

Born on September 14, 1864 in South Dartmouth, Herbert’s life took him across the country to Minneapolis for a few years before returning home to Massachusetts where his passion for civic duty took root. He went on to serve four terms as a state representative, bringing with him a sense of leadership grounded in integrity and purpose.

Herbert’s devotion didn’t stop there though, as he was also a caring father to his son Herbert Jr. who he raised with a respect for education. A scholar in every sense, Herbert Jr.’s pursuit of knowledge led him to graduate from Harvard University- a reflection of the Wing family’s dedication to literature and service.

Herbert’s time as president of the Seamen’s Bethel marked an era of steady stewardship during challenging times. He brought compassion, wisdom, and a quiet strength to our community during the years of the Great Depression. Even after his presidency, his presence remained a steady one until his passing in 1950, shortly after celebrating an extraordinary 62 years of marriage. Today we honor Herbert Wing not only for his leadership, but for the enduring values he upheld as well.
