2001 – 2005
During a chapter of quiet transformation in the early 2000s, Peter Blatchford stepped into the presidency of the Seamen’s Bethel with a steady hand and a deep sense of purpose. From 2001 to 2005, his leadership helped guide the Seamen’s Bethel through a historic shift — welcoming the National Park Service to New Bedford and transitioning the Mariners’ Home away from housing fishermen. Peter helped the institution evolve with care, conviction, and an eye toward the future.
Peter’s passion for the Seamen’s Bethel was rooted in family and faith. As a 3rd-generation member of the New Bedford Port Society, he grew up immersed in its mission: his grandfather, Captain Daniel Baker, commanded vessels sailing from Westport, Dartmouth, and New Bedford; his mother, Elizabeth Baker Blatchford, had served as an officer of the Ladies’ Branch; and his father, Larry Blatchford, was a longtime Secretary. Among this legacy, a pivotal moment arrived in 1968 when Rev. Dr. Daniel Bliss delivered a moving memorial service for Elizabeth. That day, Peter was inspired by the chapel’s spirit and commitments — a moment that lit the flame of his lifelong involvement, eventually leading to his election as President.
Peter’s leadership extended far beyond the Seamen’s Bethel. Born on February 19, 1932, he spent 68 years married to his wife Sarah after meeting her at Bowdoin College in Maine. Peter served two years in the U.S. Army, built a career in insurance and gourmet food brokerage—often delighting family with stories from national candy-trade conventions—and raised 6 children in South Dartmouth. He was also active as a Cemetery Commissioner in Dartmouth and a member of the Congregational Church.
Adventure ran in Peter’s veins — he introduced his children and grandchildren to boating on Buzzard’s Bay, backwoods exploration in Maine, and memorable trips across Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and even Borneo. He was known for his sharp sense of humor and his strong heart for helping others through life’s trials. Today, the Seamen’s Bethel is richer for Peter’s stewardship, vision, and care.
