In Memory of Jason “Tex” Vasquez

The New Bedford maritime community mourns the passing of Jason Vasquez, known to many along the waterfront simply as “Tex.” Jason, 51, was a familiar and respected presence at the New Bedford Shipyard, where he worked closely with crews and vessels that form the backbone of our working harbor. His reliability, steady nature, and quiet camaraderie made him a constant figure on the docks — the kind of person whose absence is felt immediately and deeply.

Jason was last seen on January 28, 2026, and was reported missing two days later when his vehicle remained at the shipyard and he did not report for work. On January 31, he was discovered in New Bedford Harbor by the New Bedford Police Marine Unit and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

For those who shared early mornings, long shifts, and everyday conversations beside him, Jason was more than a coworker — he was part of the rhythm of the waterfront itself. His passing is a solemn reminder of how closely knit our fishing and maritime communities truly are, where each individual plays a meaningful role and every loss is personal.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jason’s family, friends, and all who worked alongside him. Jason’s family has graciously reached out to the New Bedford Port Society and shared that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to support the ongoing preservation of New Bedford’s maritime heritage and community. May he be remembered for his dedication, his presence, and the quiet strength he brought to the harbor he called home.
